AFL-CIO: Trump AI Action Plan Is ‘A Gift to Big Tech’
President Trump’s “AI Action Plan” is not serious policymaking—it is a gift to the same Big Tech CEOs who sat front row at his 2025 inauguration.
This plan unleashes AI-powered technology on working people without guardrails in place to protect them from its potential harms. It invites the world’s largest companies to flood U.S. markets with untested, unchecked artificial intelligence (AI) that threatens good jobs and workers’ civil rights, and subjects us to dangerous experimentation. And it threatens to withhold critical federal funding from states that don’t comply with the tech lobby’s attempt to ban AI regulation. That same disastrous policy just lost 99–1 on the floor of the U.S. Senate, and is opposed by both Republican and Democratic governors, state legislators and attorneys general.
Lawmakers in Congress and the states should reject this failed deregulatory playbook. We must advance and defend federal and state policies that protect us from harmful or dangerous AI. At the same time, we must demand commonsense, bipartisan policies that ensure AI technology supports good union jobs while protecting and respecting our rights. The labor movement will continue to advocate for a vision of AI that serves the needs and interests of working people—ensuring the benefits of innovation are shared by all.
